I went to Warped Tour specifically to see these guys play so I didn't get too many shots, but I did appreciate the singer posing it out in front of my lens for a good ten seconds like this. While I was up in the security pit, I looked over on his leg and noticed something. I'm guessing someone lost a bet or passed out drunk:

"And hopefully I will carry on, and develop it, because it is worthwhile. Carry on because it matters when other things don't seem to matter so much: the money job, the editorial assignment, the fashion shoot. Then one day it will be complete enough to believe it is finished. Made. Existing. Done. And in its own way: a contribution, and all that effort and frustration and time and money will fall away. It was worth it, because it is something real, that didn't exist before you made it exist: a sentient work of art and power and sensitivity, that speaks of this world and your fellow human beings place within it. Isn't that beautiful?"
-Paul Graham from the Yale MFA graduate handbook "Photography is Easy, Photography is Difficult"

thanks to everyone who watched. it was a lighting composite job of a drum kit, so i'm sure it was very interesting watching me move a single softbox around for hours on end. and blind myself unplugging a pocket wizard on a flash while it was turned on which fired it off in my face. |

| Warped Tour |
[Aug. 23rd, 2009|01:25 pm] |

My friend Adam Elmakias was nice enough to let me tag along with him at Warped Tour yesterday, and get me wrist bands to get around while he worked. I was supposed to give him a hand shooting promos for Medina Lake on the Coors Amphitheater stage, but they ended up canceling so the end result of hauling gear half a mile in the heat was some sweet stand in pictures of me on the stage. I have alot to go through, but I'll be posting it up here as I finish. |

| Bruce Davidson's Brooklyn Gang |
[Aug. 21st, 2009|02:43 pm] |

Brooklyn Gang by Bruce Davidson was the first photo documentary series I saw that really moved me. Nachtwey's war torn victims and Salgado's starvation are gripping images that communicate their point very well, but the subject matter is something I couldn't identify with as easily as Davidson's work with a gang of teenagers living in New York City shot over the summer of 1959.
The pictures depict kids on the streets dealing with relationships and ways to pass the summer, and despite the timid environments and every day scenarios the work breaks through the doldrums often associated with such photographic situations through the strong bond the group has with each other. It reminds me of the groups of friends I've drifted through over the years, as what the gang has feels so very strong yet so temporary. Davidson captures those summers you waited year long for as a teenager, where situations that you take for granted now were once an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows. He shows us that time period where we were old enough to get to the places and situations we wanted to be in, but young enough that we shirked all responsibilities and threw caution to the wind as we tried to squeeze every drop out of the hot summer days.
